What a amazing stay at Rainforest Retreat, weekend well spend ,reception staff very friendly,our room was fabulous the jacuzzi on the deck was nice warm and clean ,we enjoyed our stay in the Deluxe Spa Room ,will come back for more.

Great value for money, nice layout, amazing jacuzzi surrounded by trees, washing machine and detergent, very clean and spacious! It had everything we needed!

Perfect retreat in the rainforest with easy access to Franz Josef glacier activities and hikes! Right in the small town center, everything is walkable. We stayed in one of the gecko cottages which was perfect for us! These seem updated and new. These have a large shower, tv and small kitchenette which were great! Felt very secluded in the rainforest while actually being very close to everything. The jacuzzi and sauna are right by reception for all the guests to use. There were many accommodation options here for all types of travelers.

What a delightful stay! We had booked a "Deluxe Tree Lodge" and on arrival were pleasantly surprised to learn we were upgraded to a "Deluxe Spa Tree House" - it was a gorgeous two bedroom with a large kitchen, living room, and a roomy jacuzzi on our deck. The jacuzzi was surrounded by rainforest flora that made it very private. The lodge has a large laundry facility which came in very handy. The lodge is a short walk to the main street of franz josef - while we were there buying provisions, the clouds parted revealing the beautiful glacier. (btw I've read the occasional bad review here -- these seemed to be for other portions of the lodge - - the lodge has a wide range of accommodation - my writeup is on the Tree lodges which are wonderful. ).

The rooms here are absolutely lovely….spacious, modern, spotlessly clean, and with a really comfortable bed. As a special feature, ours had a Spa-bath which was like having your own jacuzzi! We had a friendly welcome too. Within a short walk you’ll find good places to eat.

A lovely room,well furnished, spotlessly clean and with air conditioning and a very comfortable bed. The spa-bath was great for that, mini-jacuzzi, feeling! We were given a warm welcome on arrival. It is situated just a few minutes walk to restaurants etc

Nespresso machine and capsules, I happened to have some capsules with me, glad I can make my favourite coffee. Big spa bath/jacuzzi with hot water, and big comfortable beds.

The room was very large and exceptionally clean. Breakfast provisions were provided and it was not a problem when I asked for some gluten free bread. The breakfast provisions were plentiful and great. The room was very comfortable and there was plenty of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the location was easy walking distance to everything in the main part of town.

Sparkling clean room and bathroom, having the kitchenette was great. The place is well maintained and looks fresh and clean. We were given a room upgrade which made our stay even better.,The staff were helpful and friendly. It handy to have the laundry facilities on site. Definitely recommend staying here

Parking spaces were right in front of the room and was very convenient. This wasn’t a big issue for me but I just noticed it. This motel is very spacious, clean and comfortable. Staff most friendly. The motel is right in the heart of the town where you can walk to all restaurants. We used the laundry facilities. The kiwi centre is right down the street to see kiwis. You must go to the restaurant, Alice May to find out about the history of this restaurant and who it is named after. Most interesting. We enjoyed dining at the Blue Ice bar and restaurant, Snake bite brewery, the landing and Alice May. Views of Franz Josef were awesome from our executive room which had a spacious spa bath to enjoy. Loved the Waiho Hot Tubs in town.

Our room was clean, comfortable and spacious with a well-equipped kitchenette. Comfortable bed. The location was excellent, being close to shops and restaurants. Conveniently we dined at Alice May Restaurant next door, for which we received a 10% discount as we were staying at The Terrace. Parking was great as we parked our car outside our room. The gentleman at reception was very friendly and helpful with recommendations when we checked in.

The staff were welcoming and helpful. The room was spotless and warmed up quickly. We had the Mountain View room and it was quite large and lovely. The views were great, the heater warm, the shower was awesome and it close to everything!

👍 Like my review! We had a 2 night stay at Bella Vista Motel in Franz Josef, New Zealand as part of our journey across the country. We chose this place as it was central to the town, nearby Franz Josef Glacier Tour, had free parking, and was an excellent value. The room was also far from the main street allowing some peace and quiet after a long day. The checkin process was smooth with our assigned room but guests should contact them if their office closes. The room was clean and cozy, TV had limited channels but access to streaming services and connection to a DVD player (with free DVDs for checkout in reception), bed and pillows were comfortable, walkin shower had shampoo and body wash but no conditioner, bathroom ventilation fan and towel warmer were nice, internet was slow at times during peak hours, outlets were provided throughout the room and near the end of the bed for charging or medical devices, and several amenities (e.g. instant coffee, French press coffee grounds, tea, provided fresh milk from reception, kettle, toaster, cutlery, utensils, microwave, fridge, iron and ironing board) were helpful. Please note that there was no provided body lotion and not enough coffee grounds for the French press. They also provided an on-site laundromat and continental breakfast for a fee. The highlight is that the people working in the reception were extremely helpful and welcoming. Overall, we would consider staying here again and would recommend it to our friends and family.

The location of this hotel is perfect! It's within walking distance of the grocery store, restaurants, stores, and several attractions. There are also gorgeous views all around. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful; they informed us of the closing times of the restaurant and grocery store, and were also very informative regarding road closures. Bathroom was very clean and a small kitchen area was in the room as well. The beds were very comfortable and even had mattress heaters for both of them!

We had a great 3 night stay at the Bella Vista in Franz Josef. Our upstairs room had a fantastic view of the glacier. The room was not huge but had a small kitchenette with plunger coffee and cookies. There is a good sized bathroom and a comfortable bed. The laundry room was a great bonus. The staff are all very helpful and friendly. The motel is just 1 block from the main street with lots of restaurants, cafes and a small supermarket. It’s s ask do a short walk to the Waiho Hot Tubs. There are lots of nice walks to do and of course there is the glacier. Happy to recommend.

Host arranged a shuttle to the glacier within 30 minutes of our arrival. Excellent water pressure and spotless room. No air conditioning, but with the window and door ajar, it was not needed. Great instant coffee. Delicious water from the tap. Superb views. Nice 2nd floor table and chairs for wine and cheese cocktail. Lovely bathroom heater lamps for when you get out of the shower. Would definitely recommend without reservation.

The owner was so accommodating and flexible - we arrived early on the day and he allowed us to our room and was so kind with breakfast and Wi-Fi etc. He allowed us on a free glow worm tour, the Jacuzzi bath was amazing too. The breakfast facilities were great.

My stay at Lake Matheson Motel in Fox Glacier was fantastic, and I can’t recommend it enough. The room was incredibly comfortable, with thoughtful design and cozy touches that made it feel like a home away from home. The bed was especially comfortable, ensuring a restful night’s sleep, and everything was spotlessly clean and well-maintained. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and went above and beyond to make my stay enjoyable. They were not only helpful with local tips but also genuinely personable, making me feel truly cared for. The location was perfect, offering stunning views and easy access to Fox Glacier and the beautiful Lake Matheson area. For the quality of service and accommodation provided, this motel was incredible value for money. If you’re visiting Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson Motel is a must-stay. I wouldn’t hesitate to return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for comfort, great service, and an ideal location.

The host was welcoming and provided us with helpful information pertaining to local walks, restaurants, etc. The room was of a good size with nice, clean furniture. The King Sized bed was comfortable and there were extra pillows and blankets if needed. A super-efficient heater was a bonus. Plenty of hot water and good pressure. The only (very small) negative was the room slept three people but there was only cutlery for two people - thankfully we didn't have a third person! Excellent covered parking right outside the unit. All in all, we recommend this motel, and would definitely stay here again if in the area. It is just off the main road, so nice and quiet with friendly hosts and easy walking to the local restaurants and the main road for grocery items. (PS - Highly recommend Betsey Jane for dinner - just a few doors down from this motel)

The check-in was a unique, first time experience. There is absolutely no staff in the hotel! No desk clerk, no waiter, no room service boy, no room cleaners. They all come at 2 pm & leave at 6 pm. There was a notice hanging outside the reception office informing me, "Mundhada, your room is ready & open, keys are inside, tomorrow morning's breakfast is placed on the dining table, WiFi password is *****". There is no restaurant in the hotel though there are some nearby. Not even security, only electronic surveillance is there. Lake Matheson is a calm, peaceful, desolate motel. Rooms are good with a heater & a well equipped kitchenette. Toilets and toiletteries were good. The toilet too had a heater & the towels were always maintained warm by electric heating. Breakfast placed in the room was delicious. Christi was extremely polite and helpful.

Well presented property in a quiet location. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Undercover parking right outside. Staff friendly and helpful, mentioned local walks and viewpoints, restaurants etc and best time to go. We only stayed one night on our way down the west coast but would happily have stayed longer

One of the best holiday parks we have ever stayed in. So quiet and peaceful. Everything was well maintained, clean and tidy - from our room to the grounds and gardens. Staff very friendly and helpful.

We arrived late, just after Reception had closed but the Manager had organized our key, WIFI instructions and a map of the park. The Studio ensuite room was spacious, light, bright and clean. The beds were comfortable, a single and a double. The kitchen had all necessary utensils, but we only made our breakfast so only needed toaster and kettle. The laundry facilities were close to our room. It's a big park and there were two laundries. I enjoyed our stay and would recommend staying there.

Everything! The resident cats, carts for hire, excellent coffee at reception, spa pool was good value. Accommodation was clean and comfortable and the kitchen was great. So close to town, excellent helpful friendly staff.

By the look of it I feel it was a mobile home. However once we entered. we found it was the perfect sized and well equipped room with all the basic necessities. Although it was a economy range Hotel, to find such comfortable and a functional place, high in the mountains was truly remarkable. They had a laundry on site and a common well equipped kitchen. Located quite close to town area. This made it very convenient for having dinner and breakfast. One of them had live music too. Very Close to Glaciers. I strongly suggest one should go for Room with its own toilet, as there are other with shared bathroom.

Small sweet home maintained by a family. The instructions of check-in and everything was very well communicated in advance. The property also has a jacuzzi and sauna which was a bonus for us. We could star gaze from our room at night.

Eco-tiny house vibes, the chalets are just perfect for couple or young families. They have clearly been built with real love and a personal touch which is visible in the details of the finishing. Best for self catering as they are a little out of Franz Josef village, but the kitchenette is thoughtfully appointed with everything you need to make a great meal including a nice oven and gas hob. The master bed was so comfy with beautiful linen and waking to rain on the roof just over our heads was a scrummy. The shared spa and sauna with mountain views was a treat - and the spa is the cleanest water I’ve ever seen in a share situation. Only thing is the stairs are steep so if may not be great for those with poor mobility. No TV (which is a plus in my eyes) but great wifi. The negative reviews here are missing the point. This is an escape to a beautifully designed and appointed tiny house / chalet in the middle of one of the most beautiful spots in NZ, not a hotel. Can I live here please?

We absolutely loved our stay here! It’s such a peaceful setting surrounded by nature. The sauna, spa and outdoor shower are amazing and the cabin is so cute and cosy. The outdoor area with the heater is perfect and we loved meeting and playing with Frankie the dog who graced us with zoomies in return

Excellent location for all of the activities available at Franz Josef. The room was very spacious with everything you could require provided. A very comfortable large double bed, sitting area with a cosy flame effect electric fire, complete with two very comfortable arm chairs, small dining area/desk and a spacious bathroom. The buffet breakfast had a good variety of items and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. The main lady in charge was particularly helpful, especially when I discovered a large king sized throw stuck in one of the washing machines which on removable left the machine filthy. She very kindly cleaned it for me so My clothes weren’t contaminated by it. Strangely enough, on enquiring if any guest had claimed it, the answer was No. The view over the garden “Oasis” to the mountains was wonderful. A very relaxing place to stay and for its location, great value for money

Wonderful 2-night stay in a beautiful location, just 3 minutes north of Franz-Josef. Impeccably maintained property, like new, in a beautiful setting - wide open grassy land with large pond and ducks, large outdoor deck with seating to relax in the sun, large contemporary rooms, large comfy bed, desk and chairs, wall fireplace, tv, wifi, beautiful private bath, and an outside spa to boot. Large dining area for breakfast, with coffee, tea, milk, eggs, ham, toast, bread, cereals, yogurt, juices, etc. Angela, the hostess, is the sweetest!!! And so helpful and attentive! She makes you feel like a friend for life! And all the other staff are so friendly and helpful as well. By far, my favorite stay in all of New Zealand. Dinner twice at Blue Ice restaurant in town. Great food, and a 10% discount for staying at Franz-Josef Oasis Hotel.

We recently had the pleasure of spending three nights at the High Peaks Hotel, and I must say, it was an incredible experience! From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality that made us feel right at home. Lucy, the manager, truly went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. Her attention to detail and genuine care for her guests was evident in every interaction. She was always available to answer our questions, provide recommendations for local attractions, and make us feel welcome. Lucy's friendly demeanor and professionalism made our stay even more enjoyable. The hotel itself was fantastic, with comfortable rooms and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The amenities were top-notch, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Overall, our stay at the High Peaks Hotel was nothing short of amazing. Our room was great - clean, large and spacious. The hotel (more correctly a motel) was clean and quiet. We liked the location - an amble to the main street and a short 4 min drive from Lake Matheson, which is stunning. The staff were very helpful and friendly!

Room was very clean comfortable bed but no mattress ok for coffee/tea, no cutlery and very small cups for coffee, and very poor brand of coffee. Staff was lovely, location very good and very clean

The property is located at a side street away from the main State Highway 6, so it is more quiet, yet only a few minutes from the cafes/restaurants, petrol station, and Glacier and Mt Cook flight company. The best thing is from the property you can get an excellent view of Mt Tasman and Mt Cook with their summits covered with snow, and it's close to Lake Matheson. Our room was very spacious for a couple and the staff was very friendly, and the rate for our room was reasonable even though the property is a bit old.

High Peaks is in a good position just outside the small town of Fox Glacier, and is easy to find. My contact with staff was very limited, but everyone was friendly and helpful. Room was spacious, clean and had a comfortable bed, and the bathroom was excellent.

Great location with easy off-road parking suitable for larger vehicles. Smaller studio room, ours had two queen beds, with a kitchenette and ensuite. Separate coin operated laundry area for guest use between 4-9pm. Small outdoor seating area (2 chairs and a small table) outside the main door in the carpark area. Well equipt kitchenette and acess to shared bbq area. Check in was easy. Host was friendly and pointed out local attractions/ restaurants. Unit was clean with the remotes and toilets sanitized. Free wifi (not high speed). Downside: outside area isn't private, fine for a drink or coffee (just not in your underwear). Shower pressure is low and the shower head/rose needed descaling so water went everywhere but on you. It is also positioned rather low so anyone tall will need to do some gymnastics to get under the water. Our unit didn't have air conditioning, with the main door opening onto the carpark and only small windows on the backside, getting a breeze though the unit on the 30 deg C day was a challenge. A fan had been provided which we used overnight. Our unit also had a slightly odd smell (salted dry fish or possibly the result of combined cleaning products?). The smell wasn't a major issue and the fan moved it on.

Our studio was clean, comfortable, and spacious. With just two of us in a two-bedroom studio, we had plenty of room to spread out our suitcases and still have furniture to sit on and room to walk around. The kitchenette had everything we needed in terms of plates and cups and silverware. Both the kitchen and the bathroom were recently updated and very nice. The owners could not have been friendlier. They took the time and effort to literally walk us to our unit, despite the hurricane force rain and wind at the time of our arrival. The hotel was very quiet, while still being convenient to the restaurants and shops on the main road.

The man at reception giving us the map and an overview of the little town was very helpful and they were so friendly! The location was perfect and the view from the car park was nice. The room was clean and comfortable. Great stay.

We had a pleasant stay here and luckily we got upgraded to the one with the jacuzzi villa. We stayed for two nights here, comfy space for family of three in two bedroom villa, everything went well.

Loved the Rainforest Deluxe! Actually wish that we had more time there! We only had 2 nights, but it was great! The hotel has such a great location and you can walk to everything. The restaurant on site is surprisingly good, usually hotel food is just okay, but this was really really great food! We stayed in the 2 bedroom with hot tub, and loved having the hot tub to relax in at night after hiking! Super clean and amazing layout! I'd comment on the views, but Franz Josef didn't like us while we were there and rained the whole time! HA! I'm sure the views are great! Also- the heated floors in the bathrooms are AMAZING!!! Loved it here! Would definitely recommend and stay again!!!

Fantastic helpful staff, welcoming and fun. We even left something important behind and they went out of their way to support getting it to us. The treehouse felt private and the night sky view and native bush were stunningly showcased. Every amenity we could have wanted was there! Top quality. Yummy dinner too.

After a long trip we arrived at 7pm tired and hungry. We found a fully licenced bar and restaurant on the premises. That made our day. Woke up to a great views and the room was catered for a perfect breakfast. One of the best places we have stayed at in NZ.

We stayed in the Luxury Tree Hut and it was absolutely beautiful. Great views of the mountains and rainforest. Very clean and comfortable, fantastic bathroom. Staff members were wonderful, with one exception in the restaurant.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, giving advice, loaning us umbrellas when it rained, and even posting a precious item I accidentally left behind. The rooms were lovely, warm, private, comfortable and clean with beautiful green leafy outlooks and cute outdoor patios. The beds were mostly very comfortable. The kitchenette was very handy for making some basic healthy home made breakfasts and lunches for us and the kids. The location was a nice short stroll to restaurants and services. The rainforest/ glacier view walks were beautiful. We had a great stay.

This was a big surprise, a really good one! Our room was very spacious with a gorgeous view of greenery outside the large windows. It was very well appointed, we could have cooked if required and the bed was extremely comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful, the manageress/owner was very welcoming with a huge smile, we felt instantly at home. The Punga Grove is within easy walking distance of the shops and restaurants, as well as the wildlife centre, which is a must visit.

We had 1 night in an executive studio. It was clean and comfortable. Unfortunately it was a rainy day in Franz Josef so our lovely room with fire and underfloor heating was brilliant. It was really good to sit out on our deck and look at the rain in the beautiful garden. The lady in reception was very welcoming and helpful. The room had everything we needed and the bed was really comfortable. The hotel is really close to everything with lots of restaurants nearby and walking distance to the supermarket.

Stayed here in April 2025 with a friend. Our room had a living area and kitchen, which was great. Had everything you needed to make a meal (we made a little pasta meal one night). Kitchen had a Nespresso machine (which we loved), as well as other tea/coffee. Room was clean. Bed was comfy. Shower had great pressure and was clean. The town is small, and this hotel is perfect location to all restaurants and little corner/grocery store (5 min walk to most things). There is on site laundry and dryer for $2 NZD each. But seems like staff does use it to clean sheets as well, so can be busy at times. Parking is right in front of your own hotel door which was great. Cute little walk near by that you can go to at night to see some glow worms! (like 7 min walk away from hotel and the walk itself is a short 20 min loop).

We had a comfortable 3 night stay in a very clean Studio unit, equipped with a kitchenette that had a fridge, microwave, small oven and a two ring electric hob, toaster, kettle and electric frying pan - ideal for producing simple meals. Tea, coffee and biscuits were provided, plus a small bottle of milk on arrival. The ensuite shower provided plenty of hot water at impressive pressure. We had a couple of chairs and a small table. Parking available immediately outside our unit. It was quiet and we slept well. Our host, Andy, was very friendly and gave us useful pointers on the walks/sights in both Fox and Franz Joseph - this helped us get the most out of our time there. His dog Stella was also very friendly. Having SKY TV allowed us to watch the Super Rugby - bonus! We enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Despite some of the negative comments on Bookings, we really enjoyed our two night stay here. Our room was well equipped, clean and in good order. The room was quiet and private. Particular praise must be levelled for the shower. Superb pressure, a really large cubicle and the best shower we’ve had in NZ, together with body lotions, shampoo etc. The kitchen came with good coffee making facilities and plenty of coffee pods too. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is ideal for the Glacier and surrounding areas. We would happily stay here again if we return to the area.

Extremely comfortable sofa and bed with a great shower. Super clean and very well equipped with lots of extras that we weren't expecting, such as bath robes, coffee pods and toiletries. It was walking distance to the bars and restaurants in Fox Glacier and a short drive to the glacier walk and Matheson lake. The owner was very friendly and gave good local recommendations.

We had a fantastic stay at Mt Cook View Motel! The location is ideal, with beautiful views of the snowy mountains and perfect weather to enjoy them. The owner was incredibly amiable, going above and beyond by preparing our room in advance—he even turned on the heater and lights to welcome us, making it feel cozy right from the start. We appreciated the flexibility with check-in and check-out times, which made our stay even more relaxing. The room was spacious and well-equipped with a heater and an electric blanket, perfect for the chilly evenings. Parking was a breeze, right in front of our room. The owner also suggested a great spot to visit nearby, which really made our trip memorable. We highly recommend Mt Cook View Motel for its warm hospitality, convenience, and incredible mountain views!

My stay at Mount Cook View Motel in Fox Glacier was really enjoyable. Matthew and Hannah are very friendly and welcoming hosts, and make you feel at home right from the start. The accommodation is first class with all of the essential amenities provided within a very comfortable and modern motel room. The motel itself is within a short driving distance to the main attraction of the area including Lake Matheson, Lake Gault, Gillespies Beach and the Fox Glacier views. I would recommend Mount Cook View Motel to anyone who just wants a few nights at Fox Glacier, or like me would like to spend a week surrounded by the stunning mountain scenery of the West Coast.

The motel is in a great location and perfect for visiting the Glaciers, Matheson lake and Gillespie’s beach. The rooms were very comfortable, clean and spacious. The host Matt was really welcoming and friendly and he even put the heating on for when we arrived as we were a late arrival and gave us some great local spots to visit!

When we first walked in, we thought it looked miserable. Brown curtains, brown bedspread but despite this it was comfortable, quiet and clean. The receptionist was very, very helpful. We had two rooms with kitchenette so plenty of room. Chairs outside to sit and look up at the mountains. A drive away from the nearest restaurant and shops (unless you really like a good walk after dinner). It's a typical New Zealand motel. Washing and drying machines on site. No stairs to climb.

great wee space in the room, friendly staff and central to everything in town. Nice view of the town over the balcony on the second story. Shower soap and instant coffee provided. Trees behind the motel house Kia, that we could see and hear from the balcony of our room. And although it is next to the road, there is no road noise over night. Very quiet.

Very nice, cosy and clean room with all the facilities you would expect and need. Wifi worked well and the shower water pressure was perfect. Friendly, helpful service plus it was good value for money, and very well located in vicinity to local attractions. Nice to have a car park right outside the door too!

Wonderful manager Karen who could not have been more friendly and helpful. The room was small as advertised but had everything we needed for a short stay. Nice hot shower. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. A very short walk to bars and restaurants.

Easy to find, clean, motel. Our room had a small kitchenette area and basic utensils and cookware. Microwave, small refrigerator and a tea/coffee hot water pot were the appliances. Good for warming stuff up or simple soups but not much more, which for us was perfectly fine. Bathroom was roomy with a nice enclosed shower stall. Bed was comfortable. the sleeping area was a little tight, but doable. We were on the second floor and sometimes could hear others either voices or toilets flushing, so the walls may not be highly efficient in soundproofing. There are not many places to stay in Fox Glacier, and this is centrally located to the few restaurants, general store, and a walking loop where there are glowworms. Host/Manager was very helpful with recommendations for things to do/see and places to eat. Good for night or two during a west coast trip. For more options for places to stay/eat, Franz Josef, about a 40 minute drive north, would be a better option.

Lovely warm welcome from the gentleman on reception, he was smiley, interested in us, chatty and most of all helpful. He gave us great advice on how best to see the Fox Glacier. Such a lovely welcome made us feel instantly at home. Our room was brilliant, just the right size to be comfortable without being too small or big. Very comfortable, good sized, double bed, and the blackout curtains meant we slept extremely well. Great to have own kettle, mugs, plates, cutlery etc. All very clean. We especially liked the space-aged shower cubicle, it was much bigger inside than it looked and spotlessly clean. Loved this place, would happily move in!! Happy to recommend.

We stayed here for two nights and unfortunately had two full days of rain. Therefore the room felt dark but it was overlooking a central courtyard full of ferns so felt very private. The bathroom was quite dated with a shower over the bath, but all very clean. The welcome we received when checking in was very friendly, including a welcome kiwi drink. There was lots of free parking available on site. Food in the restaurant in the evening was fabulous. We were disappointed when we arrived that our travel agent had booked us in to include dinner as we usually prefer to venture out to local restaurants. However, in this case we were delighted - sitting outside on the covered terrace both evenings was wonderful and the food was excellent. The crayfish ravioli was particularly memorable! The service both evenings was also extremely good. Breakfast was a standard buffet - nothing special. We would happily stay here again and definitely include the evening meal as it was of an exceptionally high standard.

What a fabulous experience in Franz Josef in spite of rainy weather. This 5 star hotel was a real treat to celebrate my birthday and it was fabulous. The room was very spacious and the bathroom offered two options: bath or shower in two separate sections…not a shower over the bath as in many hotels. It was very clean and comfortable. The staff are amazing cheerful, courteous and very helpful. When a planned excursion was canceled due to weather, the young gentleman at the reception desk found me an alternative and fun activity to do on my birthday. If you want to spoil yourself, indulge in a beauty treatment or massage at the Amaia Day spa. I had one of the best massages from Noxi…what a treat. There is a great selection for breakfast and the restaurant offers a great variety of dishes to suit all dietary requirements. There is also free parking available and the hotel is only a few minutes walk from the town of Franz Josef. Really loved my time here.

We stayed at the Legacy Te Waonui Hotel in Franz Josef for two nights from 10th May, and overall, it was a lovely experience. We had originally booked elsewhere, but since we were travelling off-season, we were upgraded to this 5-star property — a pleasant last-minute change we definitely appreciated. Our room was spacious, well-appointed, and looked out onto a beautiful forest view that felt calm and refreshing. It truly added to the peaceful vibe of the place. Check-in was smooth, though a little quiet and understated in terms of welcome. One tip — if you’re hoping to use the spa during your stay, make sure to book ahead. We hadn’t, and unfortunately, it was fully booked when we arrived. The hotel is well-located, with cafes and restaurants just a short 5-minute walk away, and the surrounding area is great for exploring. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout, making the stay comfortable and easy. We were overall happy with our experience and would definitely recommend this property to friends and family visiting Franz Josef. The combination of comfort, location, and forest charm made it a memorable stop on our journey.

I stayed for two nights and had an absolutely exceptional experience. The room was superb – spacious, beautifully appointed, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. After a long day of hiking, the bath was a real luxury and much appreciated. From the moment I arrived, everything ran seamlessly. Check-in was smooth, parking was easy, and every interaction with staff was warm and professional. I want to give special recognition to the young gentleman who checked me in – not only was he welcoming and informative, but he also went above and beyond during my stay. I had a dinner package included with my booking, but arrived late and wasn’t feeling well enough to dine at the restaurant. He kindly arranged for my meal to be brought to my room later in the evening, which I truly appreciated. That level of thoughtfulness really stood out. Every aspect of the hotel felt thoughtful and well-executed. Honestly, there’s nothing I can fault. It’s a top-notch stay in Franz Josef and I’d gladly return. (Separate review for Canopy Restaurant coming – unfortunately, the dining experience didn’t quite match the hotel’s high standard.)

Haka House Franz Josef was a cozy and welcoming place to stay. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the shared kitchen was well-equipped and convenient for cooking. I had a very pleasant stay at Haka House Franz Josef. The location is excellent, with a nearby supermarket and a beautiful lake where you can see the reflection of the mountains on the opposite side of Mount Cook. After a tiring drive over the mountains from Queenstown, this accommodation provided a perfect place to rest and rejuvenate. I especially appreciated the convenience of mobile payment options for laundry, eliminating the need for New Zealand coins. The room was clean and comfortable, and the shared kitchen was spacious and well-equipped. Although I experienced a brief power outage upon arrival, it was resolved within an hour, and my stay was otherwise smooth and trouble-free. Overall, I would recommend Haka House Franz Josef for its convenient location, comfortable facilities, and modern amenities.

The best hostel we have stayed in New Zealand. Modern, cozy, great shower pressure, spacious kitchen with dining area, there is even sauna with cold shower outside. Super friendly staff and in general nice atmosphere. We extended our stay for one more night and would definitely stay again.

the staff is absolutely amazing the receptionist bec is super helpful and friendly, giving us local information and gave us great recommendations on where to visit next. she made our stay felt very special. the room was spotless clean and spacious. enjoyed all the facilities.

Very modern and comfortable Haka House, which even features a sauna! The rooms and kitchen were clean, beds very comfortable, staff was friendly and the location convenient to get to Franz Joseph Glacier.

What a find! It is a long drive from Nelson to Clyde so Franz Josef seemed a good overnight stopover. However, we were not optimistic about finding quality accommodation at a low price in such a tourist hotspot. How wrong we were! From talking to the manager on the phone before arriving through to leaving the next day, service was excellent! Reception staff, breakfast staff, the manager and his wife, all were courteous and helpful. Our twin room was immaculately clean and spacious; the beds were very comfortabe; towels and toiletries were good quality. The shared bathroom, kitchen and dining room were similarly immaculately clean. When we arrived, staff were chopping fresh vegetables for the free soup served at 8pm. it was delicious! Next morning's free continental breakfast included fresh filter coffee, replenished by the attentive staff member. We were truly astonished at the attention to detail and quality offered in this lovely hostel. We only intended to stay on our way down the West Coast but, before leaving, booked to stay three weeks later on our way back home. Repeat business is the best recommendation!

We stayed in a queen ensuite room. It was clean, quiet and comfortable. It was a bit small, and it was upstairs bp, but we had a small refrigerator and hot pot in the room. The shared kitchen facilities were clean and well stocked. Breakfast was good, it would be better if fresh fruit were offered.

Reception staff were very friendly and helpful despite arriving late in the day. We'd booked for a private double with ensuite shower. They offer free soup in the late evening and breakfast was included in our room deal. The room was clean and well presented with all the normal expectations from a much higher spec hotel, but with added benefits on being able to self-cater and other facilities from hostel stays. Really impressed.

Stayed one night, rooms were smallish, but very comfortable. Modern building, very clean and well maintained. A few minutes walk to the centre. Loved the area, great restaurants.

Our stay at Franz Joseph Montrose was exactly what we needed - cheap and cheerful. We had a private double room which had a comfy bed, and a heater to keep us warm. Towels were provided and the showers were good. Bathrooms weren’t stalls, but instead a number of small rooms, each with a shower, toilet and sink which is always nicer! As a much appreciated bonus, breakfast was provided (cereal and toast), as well as veggie soup in the evening. Amazing for the price!
